Bred in Kentucky by Hartwell Farm, Kodiak Kowboy was foaled in April 2005.

Kodiak Kowboy made his two-year-old debut in April of 2007 at Woodbine in Canada, finishing fourth. His second race as a two-year-old was in May of 2007 at Churchill Downs in a maiden special weight at 4 ½ furlongs. He won that race, as well as his next three starts – the Victoria, the Bashford Manor and the Saratoga Special.

His final two starts as a two-year-old saw him finish second in the Futurity in September of 2007 and third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in October of 2007. His performances as a two-year-old netted him the award for Canada’s champion two-year-old that same year.

In March of 2008, he made his first start as a three-year-old in an allowance race at Oaklawn Park, where he won by six lengths. The following month, he finished fourth in the Lafayette at Keeneland and second in the Derby Trial at Churchill Downs, half a length behind winner Macho Again. After a three month rest, Kodiak Kowboy won again –  this time in July at Saratoga in the Amsterdam.

The following month, also at Saratoga, he finished fifth in the King’s Bishop before moving to Belmont in September for a try at the Vosburgh, where he finished third. In October of 2008, he handily won the 7-furlong Sport Page Handicap, also at Belmont. His final race of 2008 was the Cigar Mile Handicap at Aqueduct in November, where he finished a disappointing fifth.

Kodiak Kowboy opened 2009 with a second place finish in the slop in the DF Kenner at the Fair Grounds in March. A few weeks later, in April of 2009, he won the Carter Handicap by a head at Aqueduct. Kodiak’s next start was in the slop at Churchill Downs in May of 2009, where he finished seventh in the Churchill Downs.

His next start was in June of 2009 at Philadelphia Park in the Donald Levine Memorial Handicap, where he won by four lengths. In August and September of 2009, Kodiak raced twice at Saratoga, finishing third in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap and second in the Forego.

His next two races, both victories, would be the last of his career – in October he won the Vosburgh at Belmont and in November he won the Cigar Mile Handicap at Aqueduct. Kodiak’s strong 2009 performance earned him the 2009 Eclipse Award for best male sprinter.

Kodiak Kowboy was officially retired to stud in 2009 and is currently owned by Vinery Stables and Fox Hill Farm. He is presently located at Vinery, near Lexington, with a 2010 fee of $15,000.
